Henry and Leanne Smiciklas will begin celebrating their 10 years operating Old School BBQ east of Monroe in February.

“We’re actually from Texas, and we quit our job and moved up here because we didn’t like anyone else’s,” said Leanne Smiciklas of the desire to serve up mesquite wood-smoke barbecue. “We’re out here, a mom-and-pop for 10 years, and we’re just out here celebrating. We have a lot of business, even though there’s not a lot from Monroe. I’m not sure a lot of people know we’re out here.”

Located a mile east of Monroe on State Route 2, Old School BBQ is likely the only food spot that operates out of school buses; one is the kitchen, the other provides seating. Customers can also call in for brisket, pulled pork, ribs, sausage, hot links and a number of sides.

“We’re in our 60s, and we’re just doing what we used to do for our family and friends,” Smiciklas said.
