Sultan Mayor Carolyn Eslick has started talks to transfer the Sportsman Park property from the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife to the city.
The park is maintained by Sultan, which also owns small parts of the property through old right of ways around sections of the park, said city administrator Ken Walker. The state does not pay the city to maintain the area, he said.
The park is directly north of Sultan, off of U.S. Highway 2. The entrance is the immediate right after crossing the railroad trestle. It has a picnic area, and provides access to the river.
The main reason Eslick is seeking the transfer is to open it up to locals, who currently have to pay for a Discover Pass to park their vehicles and use the boat launch, Eslick said.
There is no certainty the transfer will move forward, Walker said. For now, the project is on hold, Eslick said.
