The Washington State Patrol reports a 55-year-old Startup man was killed Thursday morning when a septic tank struck his vehicle west of Monroe on State Route 2.

Michael Higgins was driving a truck and cargo trailer westbound on SR-2 when around 8 a.m. Sept. 13, when an eastbound septic trunk attempted to slow down for traffic ahead, according to a WSP news release. The septic truck, driven by a 27-year-old Everett man, crossed the center line and collided with Higgins’ vehicle head on.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts. Higgins was killed, and the septic truck driver, Jesse Gillen, was transported to EvergreenHealth Kirkland, according to WSP. Drugs or alcohol are not being considered a factor in the collision.

SR-2 was shut down for several hours while WSP investigated and the road was cleared.
